Provence & Côte d'Azur: The young man was fatally wounded in broad daylight

Man shot with Kalashnikov in Marseille

A 25-year-old man has been shot and killed with a Kalashnikov automatic rifle in Marseille. Although the reasons behind the shooting remain unknown, Marseille police are on alert as they continue to battle gun crime in the city.

The authorities of Marseille are determined to rid the city of the gun crime that blights it

The incident, which took place around 5pm on Sunday 29th July, is the third shooting since the beginning of the month and is another reminder of how gun crime is not yet a thing of the past for France's second largest city.

According to the French Press Association, the young man was shot dead in the 13th arrondissement of Marseille and video footage released by the association shows that the whole area was completely shut down following the shooting. Despite emergency services arriving within minutes of the crime, they were unable to save the young man's life.

After having discovered a burnt-out van with a gun inside at the end of the afternoon, the Marseille police department are continuing to trace those responsible for the crime.
